Subsequent Question on zakatul fitr”
Sheikh! I have a father that started the fasting with us, he died after the eleventh day of the month. My question is, may I give zakatul fitr on his behalf?”
In shaa Allah, there is no authentic narration that states you should give zakatul fitr on behalf of a dead person. What is required is to know if you father had lived to witness the time of giving zakatul fitr. If witnessed the time it is incumbent upon you to give the zakat on his behalf but if he did not witness the time there is no blame upon you if you do not give the zakat on his behalf.
The time of zakatul fitr commences immediately after the sun set for the 29th of Ramadan till the time before salatul eid I.e prayer for eid because the prophet of Allah pbuh said that it is invalid after the prayer for the eid. Apparently, if your deceased person died before this time it is not compulsory to give the zakat.
What is authentic is that you will fast the remaining days which your father did not complete for the month of Ramadan. Narrated `Aisha:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever died and he ought to have fasted (the missed days of Ramadan) then his guardians must fast on his behalf.”
_And Allah knows best…_
